Donald E. Byrum
Donald Byrum was a young man from a small town in Ohio. He had wanted to serve his country, so when he turned 18, he enlisted in the army and was sent to fight in the Vietnam War.
Byrum was assigned to a unit of 13 men in the 25th Infantry Division. Together they were sent to the Cu Chi district in Vietnam. They were on a routine patrol on June 28, 1966, when they were ambushed by the enemy. The enemy had been lying in wait for them, and they had little chance to defend themselves.
The firefight only lasted about ten minutes, but was intense, and the enemy was well-armed. In the end, 12 of the 13 men were killed. Donny was among the fallen. He died on the battlefield, far away from his family and friends. The NVA took most of their weapons, but Byrum's pistol and knife were not taken.
The surviving members of the unit and many other men in the 25th Infantry Division remember that fateful day. They remember the sacrifice of their comrades, and the bravery of those who fought alongside them.
A few weeks later, the enemy was found and killed, but it was too late for Byrum and his fellow soldiers. It was a tragic loss for all those who knew him, and it was a reminder of the horrors of war.
Byrum's death was a sacrifice for his country, but it was also a reminder that wars have human costs. His family and friends would never forget him, and his sacrifice would not be in vain.
Byrum's memory would live on through the stories of his bravery and sacrifice. His unit's sacrifice would be remembered by the country as well. It was a tragic end to these young lives, but it was also a reminder of the selflessness and bravery of those who fight for their country, even in the face of danger.. Click here for more info.
